Alexa Chamberlain’s return to CTL as a staff member brings her journey full circle. Alexa attended CTL for 7th and 8th grade from 2014–2016, during the school’s first two years. But her connection to CTL began even earlier. As a child, she watched the idea for the school take shape around the dining room table in her grandmother’s home and dreamed of becoming a CTL student before the school had even opened. With her mom serving as CTL’s first principal, Alexa spent many hours at the school and grew up surrounded by the educators and ideas that shaped its earliest years.

“I fell in love with learning at CTL,” Alexa says. “Instead of following rules and curriculums and taking tests that discouraged creativity and stifled my love of learning, I thrived at CTL, and my confidence grew.”

A lifelong reader and writer, Alexa was reading Magic Tree House books in kindergarten and publishing her own books by age eight. At CTL, she found a reading-writing workshop classroom where she could choose the books she read, pursue topics she cared about, and grow as a writer in a community where creativity was encouraged. Today, she continues to write and is completing one of several young adult fiction manuscripts she hopes to pursue for publication.

In her spare time, Alexa reads, writes, draws, paints, writes music, and plays guitar and piano. She is excited to return to the community that shaped her own love of learning—this time as a staff member—and to help create that same experience for a new generation of CTL students.
